News Piracy

Just in 2015, book piracy in Spain caused publishers to lose 3,000 million euros. That’s why all editors, writers and publicists sleep a little better since October, after learning that Spain had caught its first book pirate.

The pirate was arrested by the National Police in October, but not before he was able to upload over 11,000 books to over 400 sites. He would upload this content under an anonymous username. In some cases, he would even upload entire book series.

The tracking operation demanded a year of intense investigations that took place after the Spanish Center of Reproduction Rights pressed charges against the book pirate.

Finally, on October 15 of last year, after arduous technological investigations, the Antipiracy Group made the arrest with the help of the local Intellectual Property Police. The AntiPiracy Group is a law enforcement team that belongs to a cyber crime sub-department called Brigada Central de Seguridad Informática. They focus on ensuring safety and tracking criminals through Internet and other kinds of technologies. The Brigade answers to the Technological Investigation Unit, one of the most specialized branches of the Spanish National Police.

In the pirate’s home, in Valencia, the police found the computers that stored databases with all the files he had uploaded under his pseudonym. The man will face charges for his criminal activity that has been valued at 400,000 euros worth of products.

Even though laws are a bit harsher in the rest of Europe regarding illegal content download, Spain has made a slow progress. The arrest, however, of the book pirate is paving the way for the prosecution of all those who wish to make money through illegal distribution of content.

It’s important to know that there will be a before and after this event. Law enforcement has not only show that they have the technology and strategy to lead the front against piracy, but they have also show that they have the ability and the smarts to do so. All that is left is the passing of firm and strict laws that punish the digital criminals.
