Asian politicians harden legal and judicial consequences in their battle against piracy.
In India, Internet providers have set up a notifications and alert system to remind their users of the dire judicial consequences of illegal content access. According to a new government legislation, pirates could serve up to three years of jail time or pay a fine of up to 400.000 euros.
Gigatel, one of India’s major providers, has been raising awareness among its users who visit torrent sites and file sharing sites with a pop up notice. The text reads “viewing, downloading, exhibiting, or duplicating an illegal copy of content” on an illegal website can translate to severe sanctions like the ones mentioned before.
The government order clarifies that the only users who will be sanctioned with judicial consequences are those who are caught downloading, consuming or duplicating content. This means that no infraction is committed by visiting a website. However, for the time being, the service provider will only notify the copyright holder if illegal content is found, so legal actions can be pursued.
Furthermore, the largest Bollywood studios are pressuring the government to be harsher and bring an end to piracy in the Indian film industry. To the date, it is unclear which specific web sites will be considered illegal.
It is very important to remember the real impact that piracy has on the industry and the companies that produce and create films. It is also imperative to keep in mind how important the revenue of all these companies is, both to the economy of a country as well as the education and cultural betterment of society.
India is just one of various countries that are starting to double down on pirates and give companies and individuals each day more resources to protect the content they produce.
